High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV or Humvee)




In the 1970s, the United States Army concluded that the militarized civilian trucks in use no longer satisfied their requirements. In 1977, Lamborghini developed the Cheetah model in attempt to meet the Army contract specifications. In 1979, the Army drafted final specifications for a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, or HMMWV. In July of that year, AM General (a subsidiary of American Motors Corporation) began preliminary design work, and less than a year later, the first prototype, the M998, was in testing.



In June 1981, the Army awarded AM General a contract for development of several more prototype vehicles to be delivered to the U.S. government for another series of tests, and the company was later awarded the initial production contract for 55,000 HMMWVs to be delivered in 1985. HMMWVs first saw combat in Operation Just Cause, the US invasion of Panama in 1989.



The HMMWV has become the vehicular backbone of U.S. forces around the world. Over 10,000 were employed by coalition forces during Operation Iraqi Freedom, the 2003 invasion of Iraq.



Hummer is a brand of off-road vehicles sold by Sichuan Tengzhong Machinery. The original Hummer H1 was based on the military High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV, or Humvee). However, the Hummer H2 and the Hummer H3 were based on other, smaller civilian-market vehicles.



Hummers were originally built by AM General Corporation, which was formerly AMC Jeep’s General Products division, in its Mishawaka, Indiana assembly plant. They were created under a contract for the United States armed forces. The first model, the Hum-Vee, was built in a variety of military-based equipment and versions. These included troop carriers, gun turrets and radar. The U.S. military, on receiving their quota, have adapted some of the vehicles, including modifications to facilitate a directional microwave crowd control beam (Active Denial System).



Hummer



The Hummer H1 is a civilian off-road vehicle based on the M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV, or Humvee), which was created by AM General. The vehicle was produced from 1992 through 2006, and was the first of what became the Hummer line.



The Hummer H2 is an SUV and SUT sold by General Motors under the Hummer brand. It is a large truck (lighter and slightly slimmer than the Hummer H1, while slightly longer and slightly taller) with room for six passengers (including driver). The rearmost part of the H2 SUV was modified to a pickup truck bed for the 2005 H2 SUT (“Sport Utility Truck”).



The Hummer H3 SUV is a vehicle from General Motors’ Hummer division introduced in 2006 and based on the GMT355 that underpins the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon compact pickup trucks. Currently produced at GM’s Shreveport, Louisiana factory and the Port Elizabeth plant in South Africa the H3 is the smallest of the Hummer models, and the first to be built by GM. It is available either as a traditional midsize SUV or as a midsize pickup known as the H3T.



The Hummer H3T is a mid-size pickup truck from the Hummer marque of American automaker General Motors. It is Hummer’s first vehicle to be only sold as a pickup truck, the other being the larger Hummer H2 sold in SUV and SUT body styles. The H3T features a 5-foot bed with built-in storage boxes and is full-time four-wheel drive like other Hummer vehicles. Originally shown as a concept car during the 2004 Los Angeles Auto Show, the production vehicle was shown at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show, with sales to begin in August 2008 as a 2009 model.



The vehicle will be featured in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.



In 2010, the H3 is expected to have a minor interior facelift along with the complete redesign of their Colorado/Canyon siblings. The 281 hp 3.6 L LLT V6 found in the Chevrolet Traverse is expected to replace the current 3.7 Atlas I5 model with the promise of better fuel economy. The 5.3 Vortec V8 is still expected to stay in production.

The Hummer HX is a concept SUV revealed on 8 January 2008 and manufactured by General Motors.[1][2] The vehicle is smaller than both the H2 and H3 and is powered by a 3.6 L (~220 cu in) SIDI V6 that uses E85 FlexFuel.



More compact than a HUMMER H3 – 81 inches (2,057 mm) wide, with a 103-inch wheelbase (2,616-mm) – the HX concept is an open-air, two-door off-road vehicle. Its design is based on the ideas developed by a trio of young designers who are new to the HUMMER studio.
